Report on:
World Subud Youth gathering
Amanecer, COLOMBIA 2004
Amanecer...
The Subud land in the area of Quindio. One of many power places in which so much Life as been lived so intensely that the air you breathe is Latihan.
I arrived a week before the gathering only to find the peace, calmness and tranquility that I waited for. I got all these sensations as soon as I set foot in Amanecer.
During this week I met some Youth that came ahead and the organizing team. I also got to know about the ongoing projects to bring Colombian Youth to the World Congress, the ideology of this gathering, its purpose and aim.
But first I'll share something that exemplifies the Colombian pace, that explains quite well the current Subud Southern American situation, it's not a negative situation nor a posite one, it's more like the absence of situation which is not a bad thing, neither a good thing.
In Colombia the word "ahora" means "now", but they have variants for this word, namingly "ahorita" and "ahoritica". All of these mean "now", but if you say "ahora" it means "now in half an hour", "ahorita" means "now in 15 minutes" and "ahoritica" means "now in 5 minutes". To express the feeling of NOW as in "RIGHT NOW" the word "YA" is used. Unfortunately "YA" is a word that isn’t commonly used there.
With this you can understand the way of Life there and its pace... Relaxed...
Expressing this I mean no disrespect for its way cause I know the effect of the word "YA". Amanecer was built with a "YA", this World Subud Youth gathering was organized with a "YA", and the ongoing projects to bring 100 Colombian Youth to the World Congress also have the word "YA" as its prime directive.
The 2 main projects being organized to bring Colmbian Youth to the World Congress are as follow:
1: Enterprises
The words "Youth" and "Enterprise" were constantly mentioned in this gathering. Enterprise for Youth had its own set of workshops and the help of a sucessful Colombian entrepeneur allways available. This project basically serves to help Youth on starting their business.
2: International workers
This project aims to send Colombian Youth abroad to work in existent European Subud Enterprises. The Youth will work in these enterprises during this year and the next to come and receive a paycheck in the form of paid inscriptions for the World Congress, with this they will only need to focus on travel expenses.

The gathering was very good. Activities were well balanced, allowing people to do all kinds of in-group things and also for personal experiences, giving people their own time. The activities were many and diverse, like playing cards, ping-pong matches, football/volleyball, horseback riding, ecological walks, rally papers, fancy dress contests, kareoke nights, lots of Salsa parties till late night, bond fires, movie nights, dancing and theater events, cocktails and last but not least latihan kejiwaan, workshops and talks.
The gathering was great. The feeling I got from other people is the same as mine. Some felt that there wasn't enough union amongst Youth, but I feel it had a nice balance, giving people to breathe and find whatever it is they're looking for.
My view...
Subud is getting younger like the slogan of this gathering says. And that Subud is getting younger everybody knows it's natural, it's our human ecosistem.
But that Subud is getting younger in the true meaning of the words is something that not everybody as grasped yet. I don't see Subud as something that ages with time, I see Subud as something that gets younger with time.
Bodies get older, but souls get younger and ideas renewed.
I find important international Subud Youth events now, "YA", so that youth can recognize themselves, as the new generation, as the next step, as the solution, as the word we feel more confortable with. But to recognize ourselves, building on friendships, on projects, on directions...
I feel that on this next World Congress youth will give the biggest impact yet. Youth presence will be felt. The so acclaimed "Youth issue" will be resolved because we will be there, ready and willing to accept the practical responsibilities attached to the Subud symbol.
Because spiritually our work is already helping a lot more than most people think of.
I can only finish this report thanking the Colombian Youth team.
