There are generally two uses of Bapak's talks. The first is personal, the other is interpersonal.

The personal use is to understand that Bapak's words were received and should be read or listened to in a state of receiving. However, I refuse to mix anything with my spiritual exercise, even Bapak's explainations -- an amalgum of animism, Hindu and Islamic teachings. Bapak's "talks as receivings" are filtered through the cultural background of the man.

The interpersonal use of Bapak's talks is to quote them to someone else. People read or listen to Bapak's words because they believe he was wise. But if you are wise enough to know which of Bapak's words to quote to a specific person in a specific situation...then you are wise enough to use your own words. However, in a discussion, people like to borrow Bapak's authority by making their own point with his words.

This borrowed authority is even less legitimate when you are providing explainations and advice to people who have not asked for them. The talks are there if I want them...and I don't. I never asked Bapak for an explaination or advice when he was alive. Why should I accept it, unsolicited, from his followers after his death?

Bapak Fundamentalists will claim inordinate value in his talks. (Have you yet experienced the truth that the reason a man has a child with a hare lip is that he went fishing while his wife was pregnant?. You must, for such is Bapak's explaination, direct from God!)

Radical Latihanists, such as myself, come to Subud because of the claim that there are no teachings and that direct experience is available. I have never needed any other aid in Subud outside of the spiritual exercise.

There is living wisdom and dead wisdom. Living wisdom is found in direct receiving. Dead wisdom is found in the collection of other's receiving. Some of other people's receivings may resonate with one's own and that may be helpful. But beware of cultural trappings and borrowed authority when you encounter wisdom not received live and directly.
