All Subud in Lebanon
Posted by Henry
Monday, July 17, 2006
The Subud group in Lebanon consists of about 25 members, most of whom are from Beirut and the surrounding areas. The members come from all different sectarian backgrounds, Druze, Christian and Muslim - about 20 of the members have joined in the past year or so. The picture below was taken at lunch two weeks ago, and shows Norma Sfeir, former Sica head (below centre) who was visiting for the summer, running a childrens' camp project, and me (below right). I spent the last 5 months in Lebanon, and until this month was the only man. However 3 more men, relatives of the women, have just been opened.

The group last met on Wednesday 12 July, when in fact, two of the men joined. Unfortunately, that was the same day that the conflict started, when Hezbollah captured the Israeli soldiers. On Thursday, Israel began its assault on Lebanon and the Subud group has not been able to meet since. Many of the members have escaped from the capital, to the mountains or their home villages. I fled the country on Friday night via Syria. Norma is still in Lebanon. At the time of writing (Sunday) all members are safe, although the situation is getting worse. Please remember the Subud members of Lebanon in your prayers. We did not expect the conflict to escalate so fast nor get as bad as it has.

Subud Youth British Congress, Wolverhampton 20-27th August
Posted by louiseharrington
Friday, June 16, 2006

It's summer time, and Britain has sun, hurray. We also have a great congress lined up for us. British Congress is always fun, with so many friends able to come along and spend time together

The exciting thing is that we now have a programme, which is evolving by the day. I love the way the plans weave into each other, creating space for people to do as they like. From the active, such as a football tournament on Astro turf and Break dancing with Conrad Williams (an old favourite) to the more sedate (forums), educational (workshops), spiritual (youth latihan and testing) to the very loud (jamming sessions and club night), and an excursion to the National sea life centre. The trip out to the sea life centre will be on Wednesday, and it would be really helpful if you were to get in touch and tell me if you are interested in booking.

We're running an evening bar at Congress, to raise money for both Subud Youth and Susila Dharma, and there will be a free drink for those who run any workshop. By the time we're all on our way to Wolverhampton, there should be many more things to do. But then again, the best moments are often found just sitting out on the grass under the sun with friends, being together.

There are a couple of things that you could help us with though, and that is BOOK. Oh yes, it's that simple, book a place. Let us know that you are coming along, and you will help to make the whole process of organizing for congress oh so much easier.

For us, guessing what sort of things you want at Congress is half the battle, the other is knowing how many of you there will be. For many of you, you are probably wondering about whether to go, lots depending on whether your friends are going. Trust me they're going, and they just might not realise it yet. And then, you're probably going to spend your time with loads of lovely new people anyway. And when it's time to go home, you'll be promising everybody that you'll definitely see them at the next congress, and so the cycle begins again.
