Fresh idea in Edgecliff

Expect to find fresh vegetables, crafts and live music in the heart of Edgecliff this summer.
The Edgecliff Community Public Market opens this Sunday at Fourth Avenue and Coleman Road. It will run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each Sunday from now until organizers run out of pumpkins in October.
Like the farmers' market that will start this month in Liberty Lake, the Edgecliff public market came out of a desire to foster community.
The market was a winter brainchild of Subud Center members. The center is a spiritual group that bought a church building in Edgecliff several years ago as a meeting place.
Richard Bohn, an artist who is the current director of the Spokane Subud Center, describes the group as the United Nations of spirituality.
The market will be held in the Subud Center's parking lot.
"It's a fun way for us to interact and be with our neighbors and play a role in the village," Bohn said. "Throughout the world, markets play a role in the health of a community."
The Edgecliff community has been very supportive of the idea, Bohn said. Earlier this spring, Subud members delivered 200 letters explaining the market and inviting the community to get involved.
The tricky part for the market organizers has been finding produce vendors. In the end, the group decided to buy organic produce wholesale and resell it at the market.
Bohn said they still hope to find local vendors who have extra garden produce they want to sell.
The market will also offer free space to local nonprofits that focus on community health, he said.
Each booth costs $15 per week.
