Subud International Cultural Association Life on an Island down-under... ( 2206 Reads )

I write this from my island home here in Australia, with the waves washing the shore and a muggy night sweeping it's way towards the sky. River-lights peek out from houses across the water, cool reflections cast a-glow. A place of peace!

Being new to Subud life, I've no idea if anyone posts up personal articles, but I'm going to stick my neck out and try! Life's full of adventure, and I'm always wondering what other people's lives are like across the seas... I'm a professional storyteller here in Oz; I share folktales from around the world in all types of venues with children. It's inspirational, and challenging! The other day I was sharing with a group of blind children; I learned much about the art of listening. Kid's are amazing, and specail needs children have so much to share!

Some people may know me from past travels, but my life of late has changed much. I'm living on a place called 'Dangar Island' in a small, rented, boatshed about ten steps away from the beach.

My morning's veiw depends on the weather; stormy seas or a soft stretch of sunshine lighting up the water. Boat is the only way to and from the island, I've a dory I row. Depending on the wind and tide it takes me about twenty minutes. Good way to keep fit, but life gets interesting at 2am with a storm sweeping the river, and me on the wrong side of it!

I love to travel, and I love visitors! My place is small, but open to stray waifs passing through. Look me up if you are passing this way, 'Dangar Island' is right on the northern outskirts of Sydney in Australia, just a stone's throw from the city. (well, sort of...)

Currently I'm off overseas soon myself, gathering stories, travelling, and visiting all my neglected friends and family. June and July will see me in the USA, travelling from the Pacific Northwest to Chicago and North Carolina. With any luck I'll be in Bali on the way home! I'm kinda wishing I didn't have gigs lined up here in August...but not very much.

So wide-spread subudians, I'd love to hear from anyone passing through this way, my heart and home are always open to travelers. And who knows, I might see you myself in my own wanderings! Love and a heartful of happiness,

Note: Thanx Mitchell, we need people who are willing to stick their neck out. I don't think visitors understand that they are the content of this website. One person said, "There is nothing on the site." They then realised, "maybe I should write something". To this day they still haven't submitted anything... In Subud, we are all responsible, not just the members with Subud jobs. cheers!!!

Hi Mitchell
this is Rosanne from the UK (Brighton) - what a nice article - thanx. I'll be coming to OZ, as part of a round the world trip, but unfortunately when you're off - in July. Why don't you come to Kalimantan for the gathering in June 22-28 - if you've never been, it's one of the greatest place in the world, well to my sense.
Keep the good vibe!
love

Hey Mitchell, Melinda here. I loved reading your story. I've been an arts/storyteller for many years, have a business called Have Art We'll Travel. The very large ibrary system here in the Seattle area, (King County) hired me for abut 12 years to do art programs with kids: I would do sort of multi-media cultural programs. SO when I did one on the Indian holiday Diwali, I went in with saris to sress the kids in, told the stories of that holiday, gave them some Indian food to eat, and did a related art project. All in a one hour program. (I have a file cabinet full of these program,s and am thinking of doing a book. I focused on the use of recycled materials with theart.

BUT,I'm telling this because I got my start with the encouragement of a lady named Margaret MacDonald, a world-renouned storyteller, who works as a local librarian, when she's not travelling around the world collecting stories and storytellers! She has quite a few books(collections of stories) and cd's. She likes to team up with a musician and record stories. WOnder if you and Laksar could do that...??? Just a thought.

When you're here this summer, come by,and maybe I can introduce you to Margie,if you're interested.

I like "special populations",too. There's one library on the Muckleshopt Indian Reservation, and I'm gone there often to do a program with the kids. My fave program was my chicken program. I would take one of my chickens with me for the kids to play with. I'd tell some chicken stories, they'd make a clay chicken to take home...you can't believe how many kids, including the Indian kids, have never touched a chicken!

I hate to say that old sentence "I know your parents", but its true. Love from Melinda Pleshe Wallis age,um...60.
